Giuseppe Capogrossi was born in Rome in 1900; his father belongs to an ancient and noble Roman family, that of the Capogrossi Guarna counts, and his mother is from the Marche.
Graduated in Law, in 1923-24 he studied painting with Felice Carena and in 1927 he went to Paris with Fausto Pirandello.
Present in 1930 at the XVII Venice Biennale, from then on he begins to participate regularly in the same and in the Milan Triennale.
At the beginning of 1933 in Milan Capogrossi exhibits in the "Group of new Roman painters" at the Galleria del Milione, the epicenter of Italian abstract art, and in October he participates with the members of the group in the drafting of the Manifesto of Plastic Primordialism.
