Lucy Kemp-Welch was a British artist who specialised in painting horses and was one of the best known female painters of her time.  This portrait is of a working horse and may have been one of many to serve in WW1, the subject of working horses, whether on farms or in the field, was where she dominated the history of horse portraiture.
