Liu Ye’s enigmatic, cartoon-like paintings feature cheerful surfaces and more serious, underlying ideas about cultural history and the artist’s native China. Liu draws on disparate influences that range from the fantastical worlds of Hans Christian Andersen and Lewis Carroll to canvases by artists such as René Magritte and Piet Mondrian. The artist takes inspiration from memories of both his childhood in China and his early education in Europe, giving personal, political, and historical heft to his deceptively simple compositions. Liu has exhibited in New York, Shanghai, Berlin, Tokyo, London, Beijing, and Vienna. His work belongs in the collections of the Long Museum, the M+ Sigg Collection, and the Yuz Museum, among others. In 2017, Liu participated in the central pavilion at the Venice Biennale.
