Pastel on paper applied on cardboard signed undistinctly on upper right part. Provenance : Private collection Angoulême (near Bordeaux). French painter trained in the workshops of Claudius Jacquand and Jean-Léon
Gérôme. He exhibited at the Salon successfully from 1873 with an honorable mention in 1879 then a medal in 1880. Recognized in international events with in particular a gold medal at the Universal Exhibition of 1889. From his first trip in 1881, his discovery of the Orient had a strong influence on his artistic inspiration. His visit to Constantinople gave an orientalist direction to his paintings. The "Turkish Woman at the Baths" was a great success and contributed to his notoriety. He was the president of the Society of Artists of Tunis. He would have been the model of M. Biche, familiar with Madame Verdurin's salon, in Marcel Proust's literary fresco "In search of lost time".
