Comments: Ames may have worked in New Hampshire before establishing a studio in Boston from 1841 to 1847. He traveled to Italy (1848), where he painted a portrait of Pope Pius IX, and on his return worked mainly in Boston but had moved to NYC by 1869. He also painted in Newport, RI, in the 1860s and Baltimore in 1870. His wife, Sarah Fisher Ames, was a sculptor.
