Descrizione dell'opera

It is known that Grant met Matisse in 1909 and subsequently set up his own studio in London. He then visited Greece in 1910, and frequently visited Paris before the war, making several visits to Picasso's studio. The Tate archives have a letter from Vanessa Bell to Duncan Grant, dated 6 March 1910 offering him travel advice for his upcoming trip to Greece and Asia Minor with John Maynard Keynes. The vibrant colours and dynamic forms reflect the influence of Matisse, Gauguin, Cézanne and van Gogh. These were the chief artists introduced to British audiences through Roger Fry’s ‘Manet & the Post-Impressionists’ exhibition, which was held at the Grafton Galleries in London between 1910 and 1911. Here the comparison with the c. 1910 Eliezer & Rebecca, oil/cardboard 66,6x52cm Christies London 27-9-2016 lot 197 can be fruitfully made, as they ressemble in the theme, painting manner and architectures. 9 pages study on email request.
