Women artists… rhythm and color on Artprice marketplace

Artmarket’s teams are resuming their selection from among the works of our partner galleries on the Artprice’s online marketplace. This week our selection focuses on four of the most famous female artists in the field of abstract art: Sonia Delaunay, Aurélie Nemours, Joan Mitchell and Geneviève Asse, all essential artists whose œuvres are internationally recognized.

A pioneer of abstraction, Sonia Delaunay put colors together so they might act with each other… or rather react to each other. All the audacity of her color play and her geometric patterns are present in the 1967 gouache presented here by the Stern Pissarro gallery.

Joan Mitchell is one of the few female artists whose prices are commensurate with her fame. Last year, she was the 17th most popular artist in the world by annual auction turnover and the top-ranked female artist (after 16 men). A leading light of American abstraction, her work was shown at the Venice Biennale (1958), at the Documenta II in Kassel (1959) and she participated in several group exhibitions, notably at the Guggenheim and at the Stedelijk Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven. She also had several important retrospectives during her lifetime, notably at the Whitney Museum. Unik gallery fine art is offering one of her abstract compositions from 1980: a drawing-watercolor on mixed media/paper.

Less well-known than Joan Mitchell, Aurélie Nemours was born in 1910 in Paris. She worked alone (without a gallery) supported by a few keen enthusiasts before being recognised in the 1980s, particularly in Germany. A superb oil painting, typical of the rigor of her pictorial constructions and of what the artist called “instant color”, is being offered by a private vendor who acquired the work from the Lorenzelli gallery.

Lastly, we pay tribute to Geneviève Asse, who passed away on August 11 at the age of 98. Close to Samuel Beckett, Pierre Soulages and Nicolas de Staël, Geneviève Asse left us a meditative œuvre, one of which is being offered by the Oniris gallery. With its blues somewhere between the sky and the sea, her work leads the gaze in essential and mysterious directions. An œuvre for sensitive and specialized collectors who seek their happiness outside the rush from one fashion to another…
