Art fair calendar: a cautious restart

Although international travel is slowly picking up, art fair organizers must still be patient in the face of lingering uncertainty and the public health restrictions that remain in force. Limited entry to interior spaces… quarantine required upon entry to certain countries… numerous postponements … international art fairs cannot easily work again until the much-debated ‘vaccine passports’ or ‘health passes’ have been effectively implemented and are fully operational. So, for the time being, the art fair calendar is coming back to life with the greatest of caution and with a majority of events being organized online. Large ‘physical’ fairs will remain rare until September 2021.

While Art Basel Hong Kong was indeed maintained in May, galleries that could not make the trip were connected by video, a hybrid model making it possible to overcome the travel constraints. The Basel edition of this essential art fair has been scheduled for 20 – 26 September. Art Basel (and all of its ‘satellite’ fairs) are banking on better conditions after the summer and this is also the case for many other international fairs, including Art Paris, the Armory show and Arco Lisboa, among others. The result is an extremely crowded calendar for the month of September. The prestigious TEFAF in Maastricht had also re-scheduled to mid-September after two postponements, but it was finally canceled and switched to a completely online version. The New York edition of Tefaf, which was scheduled for May, has finally been postponed to 2022 (TEFAF New York Spring).

A few shows are nevertheless maintaining a physical edition, especially in France. At the end of May, the Menart fair – the first fair dedicated to Middle Eastern and North African art – was held in the Avenue Hoche premises of Cornette de Saint Cyr. It was a Parisian premiere refocused around 22 galleries, put together by Laure d’Hauteville (founder) and Joanna Chevalier (artistic director). The small format was perfectly adapted to the circumstances. Likewise for the Akaa fair (Also Known As Africa) organized by Victoria Mann and Armelle Dakouo, which has adapted by offering a two-part calendar, with a first meeting at Manifesta in Lyon (13 galleries until July 16) and a second at the Carreau du Temple in Paris in November. Although Art Paris has been postponed to September, both Drawing Now and DDESSIN will take place in Paris in June, in July for the “Salon du dessin”.
