Phillips de Pury & Company’s New York Africa sale on 15 May 2010 confirmed the rising price trend for African art and not just for the internationally recognized headline artists whose works already enjoy “global” demand. However, with total income from the sale at $1.1m and a bought-in rate of 38.4%, the sale was only partially successful, even in the less than $10,000 price bracket.

Paris traditionally welcomes the Drawings Fair in March. This year, for the 19th event, 31 galleries presented more than 1000 papers from the Renaissance up to the 1970s in the Palais de la Bourse; there was a notable absence of more recent work because, for the first time, the Contemporary Drawings Fair took place March 22-26: forty or so French and foreign galleries took over a six-storey building on Avenue d’Iena for a show entirely dedicated to contemporary drawings.

In a tense economic climate, contemporary art auctions in New York are proving stronger than modern art and impressionist art sales. The evening auctions may have been unexceptional. But Sotheby’s and Christie’s still managed some reassuring surprises, generally in the less prestigious later sessions, when prices for some artists showed real growth and some of them turned out to be impressive records.
