Comments: Brother of Ralph Earl and father of Augustus Earl (see entries on each). He went to England as a young man, studied in London, and exhibited at the Royal Academy. Returning to America in 1794, he painted a number of portraits in Charleston (SC) and intended settling there, but his career was cut short by an attack of yellow fever from which he died in Charleston on August 18, 1796.
