Comments: A descendant of slaves from Trinidad who began painting at age 43. She was a domestic servant until 1948 and later a gatekeeper. Dewhurst, MacDowell, and MacDowell call her a visionary artist because of her deeply personal imagery and provocative use of eyes." Preferred media: pen, ink and crayon drawings in 1940; watercolors, oils after 1954; some collage in the 1960s.
