Comments: Came to U.S. in 1892 to act as art commissioner for Holland at the Columbian Expo, Chicago, 1893. His wife was from a royal Hawaiian family. He painted portraits in Hawaii which he added to his gallery of exotic people. He was the first Westerner to paint the portrait of the Dowager Empress Tzu Hsi of China. Specialties: Aboriginal races; portraits; interior; still lifes of Chinese porcelains.
