Among his subjects: sailors on shore leave (The Fleet's In!," 1934; "Sailors and Floosies," 1938, WMAA), which sparked national controversy. He also parodied obnoxious tourists ("Bar Italia" 1955, NMAA). Along with Jared French and George Tooker, he based his egg tempera technique and formal principles on the ideals of early Italian Rennaissance painters such as Cennino Cennini. He is regarded as a master of the human figure. Positions: v. pres., Bd. Control, ASL, 1935-.
