Comments: His style evolved from Cubism to Abstract Expressionism in his later work, often displaying a collage effect in the layering of forms and color. Around 1959, he switched from oil paints to acrylic as a medium. His bold, poster-like paintings were often referred to as "Abstract Pop." With his brother, he founded the Barta Gallery in NYC, a cooperative, in 1958. Teaching: vis. artist, Univ. Wis., 1969; critic art, Yale Univ., 1969-70; artist, Cornell Univ., 1970; Univ. of Maryland, 1977-91.
