biografia di Peter WOLTZE (XIX)

Birth place: Weimar

Addresses: Milwaukee, WI, and possibly New Orleans, 1880s

Profession: Painter

Comments: There is some confusion over whether the Peter Woltze who painted in Milwaukee in the 1880s is the same as the P. Woltze who painted in New Orleans at about the same time. In Art Across America, William Gerdts refers to a Peter Woltze, watercolor specialist, who came to Milwaukee from Weimar and painted a portrait of Viandon in 1882 and also wrote criticism for German language publications before returning to his native city." It is quite possible that is the same artist who painted in New Orleans and signed as P. Woltze. The latter artist is discussed in The South on Paper: Line, Color, and Light as producing watercolors of genre and street scenes in New Orleans and the rural south. It is also possible that the G. Woltze listed in the Encyclopaedia of New Orleans, is actually P. Woltz and that someone may have misread the "P" as a "G." The Encyclopaedia descibes two watercolors ("Hauling Cotton at the Levee" and "Street Scene, New Orleans"), signed as "G" Woltze, with the latter work inscribed "New Orleans, 1889." The fact that these are of similar subject matter to that of P. Woltze makes the link possible.
