Comments: First listed in the directories in Milwaukee in 1878, he began work that year when he drew and published a view of Chilton, WI. His career spanned more than three decades, showing partnerships with J. Bach, J. Stoner and George E. Norris (see separate entries). His association with Stoner lasted from 1880 until his retirement in 84. At least forty of Wellge's views were published in that time. He went into partnership with George Norris, Brockton, MA in 1884 and in 1885 the firm became Norris, Wellge & Co." of Milwaukee. In 1887 Norris returned to New England and Wellge continued publishing as Henry Wellge & Co. until 1888. In 1888 he established the "American Publishing Co."and published large folio prints of thirteen Midwestern towns, eight mountain states, two cities in Texas and seven places in Virginia. He stayed in business until 1902, producing only a few later lithographs.
