Jules Coignet was a notable landscape painter and draughtsmen from France that traveled widely in Europe and North Africa.

This oil painting shows a romantic view of a Swiss mountain scene with a castle overlooking a lake near sunset. This work shows the typical style of Coignet with his loose brushwork in certain areas, his particular attention to the tree on the right, and small figures to provide scale to the overall landscape. 

While not signed, this work comes with an attribution to Jules Coignet provided by Eric Turquin, Paris.
