38th edition of the FIAC!

[17/10/2011]

Do not head for the Cour Carrée of the Louvre this year. The 168 galleries selected for the 38th edition of the FIAC will be presenting their works in the Grand Palais from 20 to 23 October 2011, one of the most beautiful buildings in Paris, covered by the largest glass roof in Europe.

While the Cour Carrée area, usually dedicated to forward-looking art forms and emerging art, will not be available due to repair work the FIAC is optimizing the Grand Palais space by opening three new exhibition areas located on the upper level. There will also be plenty of circuits and artistic experiences outside the walls of the Grand Palais, especially in the Tuileries Gardens and the Jardin des Plantes.

Once again, the FIAC has successfully overcome the challenge of organising a truly international fair: 21 countries are represented with a predominance of European galleries (75%). France has 54 galleries (32%), followed by the United States with 26 galleries, Germany with 21 galleries, Italy with 12 galleries, Belgium with 11 galleries, the United Kingdom with 10 galleries and Switzerland with 9 galleries. Newly represented countries are Brazil, Turkey and South Africa. The diversity of the work on offer is another major advantage of this art festival in which the fathers of Modern and Contemporary art, like Jean Dubuffet, Pierre Soulages, Nicolas de Staël, Jean Fautrier, Wilfredo Lam and Donald Judd, will be rubbing shoulders with the major “current” signatures of Contemporary art like Philippe Parreno, Maurizio Cattelan, Liam Gillick, Wade Guyton, Mona Hatoum, Xavier Veilhan, Wim Delvoye, Takashi Murakami and Bharti Kher.

Despite the instability of financial markets, art collectors are fighting the pessimism prevailing in the general economic environment and the level of purchase intentions as recorded by Artprice’s A.M.C.I. (Art Market confidence Index) is strong at close to 70%. Moreover, the recent results from the Contemporary art sales in London (12 – 14 October) show that demand is strong for high-end works. Hence the market backdrop to this 38th edition is in fact distinctly positive.
